The Ancient Story That Changed How I Let Go of the Past
Have you ever found yourself replaying a mistake… over and over again?
That one conversation.
That moment you wish you could undo.
That version of yourself you just can’t seem to forgive.
Yeah… I’ve been there too.
Let me share a story — one that shifted everything for me.
Two Monks and a Moment We Can All Learn From
Two monks were traveling together, walking along a countryside path. Eventually, they reached a river — fast-moving and murky.
Standing at the riverbank was a woman in an elegant silk robe, clearly distressed. She needed to cross but didn’t want to ruin her clothes.
Without hesitation, the older monk picked her up, carried her across the water, and gently placed her on the other side.
She didn’t thank him. She simply walked away.
The younger monk was stunned. Their vows forbade touching women. But he said nothing… at least, for a while.
Hours later, still fuming, the younger monk blurted out:
“How could you carry that woman? We’re not even allowed to touch them!”
The older monk replied calmly:
“I put her down hours ago… Why are you still carrying her?”
The Weight We Carry
That story landed in my chest like a truth I’d been waiting to hear.
Because isn’t that exactly what so many of us do?
We hold onto things — moments, words, wounds — long after they’ve ended.
We replay them. Re-feel them.
We carry them into our present… and unknowingly, into our future.
The past becomes a lens we look through, not a place we’ve been.
But here’s the thing:
Your mind doesn’t know the difference between what’s happening now, and what you’re still reliving.
Each time you revisit that pain, your nervous system responds like it’s still real.
Your relationships feel it.
Your confidence feels it.
Your joy gets dimmed by it.
You Don’t Have to Carry It Anymore
So I’ll ask you what I asked myself:
What are you still carrying that it’s finally time to put down?
That old regret?
That shame-soaked memory?
That harsh voice in your head?
You don’t have to forget. But you can let go.
You can choose to stop punishing yourself for who you used to be.
You are not your past.
You are who you’re becoming.
Let This Be the Moment
Take a deep breath.
Breathe in the you that’s growing.
Breathe out the weight you no longer need.
Say to yourself — out loud if you can:
“I’m putting it down today.”
You deserve peace.
You deserve freedom.
And both begin when you choose to let go.
